Six cylinders, two turbos and a three-piece folding roof = the new BMW M4 convertible
JUST AS THE smog clears from parts of Britain, BMW has revealed its hottest roofless model yet: the new M4 convertible.
The high-performance, four-seat drop-top, which will go on sale in September, is a more practical alternative to the Jaguar F-type. It is powered by a 3-litre, straight-six engine with two turbochargers producing 425bhp, sufficient to propel the car from 0-60mph in 4.6sec. The top speed is electronically restricted to 155mph.
BMW claims the newcomer is 60kg lighter than the M3 convertible, the model it replaces.
If these figures don’t get sports car buyers hot under the collar, the addition of a new Air Collar ‒ an optional heat duct placed behind the front seat passengers’ necks – should.
The new car comes with either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission. However, with an impressive 405 Ib ft of torque from just 1,850rpm, the engine should be capable of hauling the car from tickover in top gear. Such flexibility begs the question: why spend the extra £2,645 on the M DCT automatic ‘box?
The three-piece, folding solid roof takes 20sec to open or close. When raised, it frees up 370 litres of luggage space though when closed, this shrinks to 220 litres.
The M4 convertible will cost £60,730, an increase of £1,655 on the outgoing, V8-powered M3 convertible.
