News: Mercedes to launch more affordable AMG Sport models
More choice but less exclusivity for AMG drivers
MERCEDES-AMG has announced it is developing a new range of AMG models which will be more affordable for drivers.
Just as Audi offers S models to fit between RS and S line trim levels, Mercedes says it will launch the first two AMG Sport cars in January, at the Detroit motor show.

The AMG Sport models will fill the gap between the high performance, high-powered AMG cars, and Mercedes models which are little more than a cosmetic styling pack and are, confusingly, known as AMG Sports.
The first will be the GLE AMG Sport, an SUV crossed with a coupé which will be a competitor to the BMW X6. The other AMG Sport is based on the C-class saloon.
There is no confirmation of pricing yet but Mercedes claims that AMG Sport models will “bear out the high-performance brand’s claim” with more potent engine outputs, all-wheel drive as standard in selected markets and special chassis components and brake systems from the classic AMG models.

Full-blown AMG cars include the £74,115 E63 AMG Saloon and the £38,195 A45 AMG hot hatch, but a cheaper AMG Sport sub-brand could attract buyers who can’t quite stretch to the price tags of the most powerful versions.
The new models will dilute exclusivity for some customers, as Mercedes-AMG says that the new AMG Sport models should help it to double sales.
Canny drivers who crave the performance of an AMG model know that there are impressive savings to be made by buying a second hand example. A used 2013 Mercedes C63 AMG with just 9,486 miles on the clock is featured on Driving.co.uk for just £39,485, saving over £17,000 on the list price. And because it comes from a Mercedes dealer, it comes with a comprehensive warranty.
