Party on! Wayne's World AMC Pacer sold at auction
Ex-squeeze me? It sold for how much?
THERE HAVE been many memorable motoring moments committed to film but one of the most beloved, particularly for those who grew up in the 1990s, is early on in Wayne’s World, the 1992 comedy, when the eponymous Wayne Campbell and friends sing Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody while driving through Chicago.
The scene’s star car, a 1976 AMC Pacer, which was perfectly cast to convey Wayne’s yet-to-make-it image, went under the hammer at the Barret Jackson auction in Las Vegas over the weekend, selling for $37,400 (£31,000) — around double the price of the market value of a Pacer in decent nick.
The car was extensively modified for the film, including a baby blue paint job with flame decals over the original yellow exterior, a bespoke white and blue interior and mismatched wheels, with factory steel wheels and hubcaps at the front but chrome spoked rims at the rear. In addition, the heater was removed, rear wheelhouses were modified to fit speaker boxes and a hole was drilled in the roof for the famous liquorice dispenser.

The catalogue entry says every effort was made in the car’s extensive restoration to bring it back to its condition when the movie was made.
And importantly, the stereo system is operational and, said the auctioneer, “ready for you to do your own rendition of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.”
