Paul McCartney's classic 1967 Lamborghini 400GT could sell at auction for £500,000

AN ULTRA-RARE Lamborghini super-GT that once belonged to rock star Sir Paul McCartney is to appear at auction this weekend with a guide price of £400,000-500,000.
The Beatles legend’s 1967 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2 Coupé will appear at the Bonhams auction alongside other high value classic cars previously owned by Sir Rod Stewart and Nick Mason, the Pink Floyd drummer and notorious car enthusiast.
The 400GT was the four-door follow-up to Lamborghini’s first car, the 350GT, and was designed to steal sales away from rival Ferrari’s larger grand tourers. Famously, Ferruccio Lamborghini was a Ferrari customer but vowed to build better cars after receiving poor treatment from the Maranello firm.

Despite the company’s relative youth, Lamborghini quickly earned a reputation for quality.
Reviewing the 400GT 2+2 coupé, a sporty version that removed the rear doors but kept the rear seats, and of which only 247 examples were built, Autocar magazine said it was “better than all the equivalent exotic and home-bred machinery in this glamorous corner of the fast-car market.”
McCartney’s car is believed to be one of only four examples shipped to Britain and was converted by the musician from left- to right-hand drive in the late 1960s, before he sold it in 1979. It was bought by a “well-known motoring connoisseur and collector”, who changed the colour to the wine red colour seen here.
Tim Schofield, head of the auction house’s motor department, said: “Paul McCartney he has had some fantastic cars in his time and this is no different.”
It will be auctioned later this month with Nick Mason’s 1974 Ferrari Dino — dubbed the coolest car ever made. The jet-black pocket supercar, which has “Nero” painted down the side, is expected to raise £420,000 in the Bonhams sale.
Sir Rod Stewart’s bright red 200mph Lamborghini Diablo, which he bought himself for Christmas in 1991 after Stewart’s Vagabond Heart album went platinum in six countries – is expected to fetch a tidy £136,000.
All three collection cars will be up for auction at Bonhams’ Goodwood Members’ Meeting sale on March 18.
