1963 Ferrari 250 GTO sells for £52m, becomes the world's most expensive car

A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO has reportedly sold for an eye-popping $70m (£52m) to become the world’s most expensive car.
The new ultimate record-holder is thought to be have been bought by David MacNeil, an American businessman and avid Ferrari collector.
Though the price might be seen as exorbitant to some, the Ferrari 250 GTO is well-known as the world’s most coveted car thanks to its combination of beauty, rarity (only 36 built between 1962 and 1964) and incredible speed: the road-legal racing car can hit 174mph.

And this particular example does have considerable provenance, having been piloted by many big names in racing during its heyday, with the highlight being an outright victory in the 1964 Tour de France.
It’s also one of the most pristine examples anywhere in the world, having never experienced a major crash in its extensively-maintained life.
The private sale will have comfortably smashed the former record of £40m, set by another 250 GTO in 2013. The following year, another 250 GTO became the most expensive car sold at auction, with a hammer price of $38m (£23m).
And the only way is up, it seems: Marcel Massini, a leading Ferrari historian, said that he was confident a GTO model would be sold for $100m (£75m) within five years.
