Video: Porsche unleashes its 919 Evo Le Mans racer at Nürburgring

Porsche may have set a new Nürburgring lap record after letting loose its most extreme car to date on the German race track.
Having posted the quickest lap around Spa-Francorchamps in April 2018 with an extreme evolution of its 919 Hybrid, the 720bhp car has now been put through its paces at the world-famous Nürburgring Nordschleife as part of Porsche’s ‘919 Tribute Tour’ — a farewell programme for the Le Mans-winning machine.
Officially, Porsche has yet to confirm whether it has — or will attempt to — set the outright Nürburgring record in the car. Judging by the video above, though, the Stuttgart outfit has no issue with driver Timo Bernhard stretching the 919 Evo’s legs around the tight and tricky layout of the Nordschleife.

Being a modified version of a Le Mans Prototype racing car, the Porsche 919 Evo won’t be eligible for any road car records there. Without the hassle of having to comply with the Le Mans series’ strict fuel consumption regulations, it isn’t even eligible to race any more. But it does make it one of the fastest cars ever to hit the track there, if not the fastest.
Not that setting Nürburgring records should bother Porsche too much; the company’s 911 GT2 RS currently holds fastest ever time by a production car at the ‘Ring.

If you’re anxious to see it in action, Porsche has confirmed the 919 Evo will be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month, with a demo run during the Festival of Porsche at Brands Hatch on September 2 also on the cards.
