THE WRAPS came off the hooligan in the new S-class family at New York: the S63 AMG coupé.
Touting 577bhp and 664lb ft torque, courtesy of its twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8, the two-door four-seater, which is 65kg lighter than the previous model, cannons from 0-62mph in 3.9sec when fitted with Mercedes’ 4Matic four-wheel drive system. In standard, rear-drive trim, the benchmark sprint falls to 4.3sec. Both versions are limited to 155mph and have a seven-speed, AMG Speedshift gearbox.
What the rear-drive version lacks in its sprint time, however, it makes up for with enhanced ride comfort thanks to AirMatic air suspension featuring Mercedes’ Magic Body Control, first seen on the new S-class saloon.
This active body control system scans the road ahead for imperfections and adjusts the suspension accordingly. It also features a corner tilting function that tunes the suspension in corners to give occupants a more stable ride.
Designed to do battle with cars such as the Bentley Continental GT, the C63 AMG coupé bristles with additional aerodynamic details and AMG lettering. Inside, the cabin is a haven of high-tech luxury and features leather -trimmed sports seats, aluminium shift paddles and Mercedes’ new touchpad, multi-media system.
The S63 AMG coupé is expected to cost from £100,000 when it goes on sale towards the end of this year.
