Kitty Hawk unveils electric flying car

More of a seaplane, really

KITTY Hawk has unveiled the latest version of its ‘Flyer’ flying car with a new video.

The Flyer is the first commercially-available offering from the Silicon Valley start-up, which is backed by billionaire Google co-founder Larry Page.

Although described as a flying car, the Kitty Hawk Flyer is more a shrunken-down seaplane than a flying car, with 10 rotors, two pontoons, stripped-down cockpit and simple controls.

Kitty Hawk hopes it will “free people from traffic” but it could be seen as more of a novelty gadget than the next-big-thing transport trend.

The fully electric Flyer is limited in both speed (up to 20mph) and range (it will only be able to fly for up to 20 minutes on a single charge) but it does have a major advantage in urban and scenic environments: relatively low noise. In Kitty Hawk’s own words, the aircraft sounds more “like a lawnmower” than an aeroplane or helicopter.

At time of writing, pricing for the Kitty Hawk Flyer has yet to be announced, though orders are currently being accepted for a “Founder Series” version of the gadget.
